And The Oscar SHOULDN’T Have Gone To…
Here is a list of films I believe should never of won the Oscar for Best Picture. I’m not saying that the film in question is bad, what I am saying is I strongly believe the year the film won it’s Best Picture gong, there was another film better than it, or in some cases a few films better than it. It’s hard to say at the time that a particular film is far greater than the other, thats mere opinion. Over time, some winners have gone on to become distant memories, whilst some runner ups have taken their place in cinema history.

1990 Best Picture Winner: DRIVING MISS. DAISY
What Should Of Won:DO THE RIGHT THING
Driving Miss Daisy should of never won an Oscar for Best Picture back in 1990. The Academy bottled it. If anyone one knows anything about films, they’ll know that Spike Lee’s, Do The Right Thing was the best film that year. Heck, Do The right Thing is one of the best films of the 1980’s. Spike Lee did however receive a Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay that year, but I think that was a token gesture for a gutless Academy who refused to nominate Do The Right Thing simply because of it’s subject matter. I ask the question, who’s watching Driving Miss Daisy 23 years later? No one.

1995 Best Picture Winner: FORREST GUMP
What Should Of Won: SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION or PULP FICTION
Forrest Gump is a film I very much like, it’s very Robert Zemeckis. I just don’t think it quite matches up to Pulp Fiction or Shawshank Redemption. In all honesty, am not a huge Shawshank guy. I like the film a lot, just a little sick of it being on television 45 times a year, it takes away the films appeal. As for Pulp Fiction, it’s a masterpiece and still to this day a huge breathe of fresh air. 1995 was an exceptional year for film, arguably one of the strongest Oscar lineups, so maybe the Academy couldn’t decide and flipped a coin. I’m just suggesting maybe they should of flipped one more time.

2003 Best Picture Winner: CHICAGO
What Should Of Won: GANGS OF NEW YORK or THE PIANIST
They love a good musical the Academy. The 2003 Oscars is a strange one. It wasn’t the best year for film and the Best Picture category isn’t exactly bursting with great films. All five nominees are decent films, but in my opinion, Chicago is probably the weaker of the five. I would of given the prize to Gangs Of New York, although I don’t think it’s one of Scorsese’s best films or maybe Roman Polanski’s Pianist would be just an equal winner. Overall, the 2003 ceremony proved that if you make a musical or a period drama, you’ll get a nomination. The Academy love’em.

1998 Best Picture Winner: TITANIC
What Should Of Won: GOOD WILL HUNTING or L.A. CONFIDENTIAL
One of the most anticipated and talked about films of it’s time. Yes, Titanic took the statue home for Best Picture in 1998 but I dare you to watch the film now. It hasn’t aged well, and is jammed packed with cheese. Good Will Hunting is an excellent film written and starring two hungry future stars, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. L.A. Confidential is a hard hitting cop drama, and one of Russell Crowe’s best films. Either one would of been a creditable winner, but most importantly both films have stood the test of time better than Titanic.

1983 Best Picture Winner: GANDHI
What Should Of Won: E.T. EXTRA TERRESTRIAL
Let’s face it, E.T. is one of them films everyone has seen or must see. If it doesn’t choke you up at the end, you’re not human. Gandhi is a good film which I did enjoy a lot, it’s just not E.T. is it. I think E.T. might be one of those films that felt the wrath of the Academy not awarding blockbusters the biggest prize. Some blockbusters are exceptions to that rule. I honestly think E.T. was the best film that year. It was new, it was fresh, and quite simply, timeless.

1969 Best Picture Winner: OLIVER!
What Should Of Won: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
This is a big snub. Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey was phenomenally groundbreaking. I mean, it’s staggering to think what Kubrick achieved with this film visually. I’ve always had this opinion, and this based on a few articles I’ve read, the Academy had a straight up dislike for Kubrick. Mainly because he was so innovative and provocative, he simply wasn’t their cup of tea. At the time, they didn’t like the fact that classic Hollywood wasn’t as “in” as it once was, thanks in large to people like Stanley Kubrick who wanted to see how far cinema could go and wanted to take film to places it had never been. It’s a shame that Stanley Kubrick was never awarded an Oscar for either Best Director or Best Picture.

1991 Best Picture Winner: DANCES WITH WOLVES
What Should Of Won: GOODFELLAS
I like Dance with Wolves, but GoodFellas was the film that should have gotten Martin Scorsese his first Oscar. After getting snubbed for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull (which he should of won two Oscars for) GoodFellas was the Oscar he and his film deserved. Again, the Academy decided to reject Scorsese, because the Academy know best. Don’t get me wrong, Dances With Wolves is a film you should watch, but GoodFellas is an essential watch.

1996 Best Picture Winner: THE ENGLISH PATIENT
What Should Of Won: FARGO
How did a film thats is known by everyone to be utterly boring win Best Picture? The English Patient is so boring it was made fun of on sitcoms like Seinfeld. Seriously watch the trailer for the film on YouTube; even it’s three minute trailer puts you to sleep. The main thing that ticks me off about this boring film winning the Best Picture in 1996 is it beat The Coen Brothers’ Fargo. I mean, come on! What would you rather watch; two people talking about the desert for over two hours or a quirky-kidnap-ransom film by two of the best filmmakers around today? I thought so.

1977 Best Picture Winner: ROCKY
What Should Of Won: TAXI DRIVER, ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN or NETWORK
Take your pick between Taxi Driver, Network or All The President’s Men, seriously, take your pick! All of them would of been credible winners. Instead the Academy gave the award to a film that has a lead actor who can barely speak English let alone act. I actually think the Academy were smoking crack the night Rocky won Best Picture.
Quentin Tarantino & Diane Kruger
